TCM Acupuncture is a technique in which practitioners stimulate specific points on the body, usually by inserting thin needles through the skin. Studies suggest that acupuncture stimulates the release of the body’s natural painkillers and affects areas in the brain involved in processing pain. Results from a number of studies suggest acupuncture may help ease types of pain that are often chronic, such as low-back pain, neck pain, osteoarthritis/knee pain, and carpal tunnel syndrome. It also may help reduce the frequency of tension headaches and prevent migraine headaches.

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system - comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. Using a soft touch practitioners release restrictions in the craniosacral system, which has been shown to improve the functioning of the central nervous system, as well as many other systems of the body, such as digestive, musculoskeletal, respiratory, circulatory, and more. CST has also been shown to help with the physical components related to such somatic conditions as Post Traumatic Stress, depression and anxiety. It is highly effective for releasing trauma trapped within the tissues of the body that are implicated with chronic pain.

Hi There!

I have always thought that “people just need to talk more!” We all struggle with something at some point in our lives. For some, it’s a short period of time, while for others, it travels alongside them for life. If people just talked more, perhaps struggles wouldn’t feel so debilitating, desperate and lonely. The thought “I am the only one” wouldn’t stay stuck in people’s minds. The sense of stigma around mental health issues, and asking for help, wouldn’t be so strong. By talking, taking a leap of faith, and opening up, one can begin to heal. Life is not always a barrel of monkeys, and it isn’t always bad. I cannot promise what you are struggling with will go away forever, but I am willing to listen and walk with you as you learn skills, build a healthier lifestyle, engage in meaningful relationships and more.

Specializing in the treatment of eating disorders and distorted eating, I also work with those struggling with body image issues, low self-esteem, trauma, depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder/tendencies, life transitions, self-injury, boundaries and assertiveness.

My educational accomplishments include:

Honours Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Lakehead University

Palliative Care Certificate from Lakehead University

Masters of Divinity from Heritage College and Seminary

Certificate in Eye Movement Reprocessing and Desensitization (E.M.D.R.)

Trauma Certificate from Wilfred Laurier

I am dedicated to the pursuit of continuing education which leads me to attend various workshops and training seminars throughout the year.

John’s treatment style centres on Swedish massage to decrease pain, relax tight muscles, and decrease stress. Depending on the patient’s goals, he also incorporates myofascial release, craniosacral therapy, muscle energy technique, trigger point release, and practical exercises that patients can complete at home.

While he does offer deep tissue massage to those who prefer a deeper pressure, he knows that massage doesn’t need to hurt in order to be effective. He recognizes that every patient has their own pressure tolerances and will always work within a patient’s preferred range.

John is trained to treat a wide range of muscular, postural, fascial, and neurological concerns. Some of the conditions he frequently treats are back pain, neck and shoulder tension, tension-type headaches, hip pain, and forearm tightness. He is excited to work with people of all ages, genders, and body types. Everyone is welcome and can expect to be heard and treated with respect, compassion, and care.

John is also a proud father to two young kids who keep me him on his toes. In addition to spending time with his wonderful family, including his RMT partner, Marina, he enjoys cycling, climbing, juggling, and reading. His passion and “other job” is performing and composing classical, folk, and pop music, which he has done professionally for over 15 years.

Dr. Mélanie LeBlanc grew up in Bathurst, New Brunswick, a small coastal town.  She always loved the small town feel and the friendly people that came with it and was excited to get that sense of community again by moving to Powell River. Growing up, she was always active. She started figure skating as soon as she was able to get on the ice at the age of three and fell in love it. She later found other passions in volley ball during high school, yoga while at university, and now aerial silks right here in Powell River.

She always loved sciences and had a great interest in the human body growing up, and always wanted to go to medical school and become a doctor. She attended the University of New Brunswick where she graduated with honours in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and made the Dean’s list.  During her time there, she decided she wanted to help people with a more natural and holistic approach, which led her to chiropractic.

Mélanie graduated from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto, ON, in 2018. During her internship year, she learned from the brilliant minds of her clinicians at the school’s clinic as well as the Sherbourne Health Center in downtown Toronto to treat her patients with love and care. During her internship year, she was a co-president of the Global Health Initiative club, which raised money for the Global Peace Network and World Spine Care, both of which provide chiropractic care to third world countries.

Since graduating, she has continued her education and is certified in the Webster technique (for pregnancy). She also has 50+ hours of continuing education in concussions assessment and treatment and is certified through Complete Concussion Management Inc (CCMI). She has also recently taken an interest in foot health and function.

Dr. LeBlanc’s treatments are evidenced-based and tailored to each individual. Initial visit includes a thorough history and physical exam to find the root of your problem.  Treatments can include soft tissue therapy to release tight muscles, spinal and joint manipulation – including Diversified technique and drop-pieces from Thompson technique, rehab exercises that include strengthening and stretching, as well as healthy lifestyle advice and education.

She treats a variety of musculoskeletal and neurological conditions.  She loves treating anyone from pediatrics to helping seniors stay active and young at heart, and anyone in between!

Dr. Brittney Chisholm is proud to return to the town she grew up in to give back to the community that raised her. By providing patient-centered service, advocacy, concussion diagnosis & rehabilitation, and chronic pain education, Dr. Chisholm pours her heart into service of her beloved town.

Dr. Chisholm practices evidence-informed, conservative chiropractic care - that means research and clinical experience guide her treatment plans which are customized for the individual following a thorough history and physical exam. She uses a variety of techniques in her treatment plans: manual muscle release, trigger point therapy, spinal manipulation (Diversified technique, Thompson drop-piece technique, and the light-touch Activator technique) exercise & rehabilitation, graded mobilizations, fascial manipulation, Rolfing techniques, biomechanical corrections, postural and nutritional advice, and education.

Brittney treats an array of musculoskeletal and nerve-related conditions but has a particular interest in treating complex pain and chronic pain. Through a 3 hour assessment that captures how pain shows up biologically, psychologically, and socially, she helps identify treatment options available to you, teaches you the neuroscience of pain, and helps you understand important concepts such as pacing and mini-goal setting, and how to challenge your negative beliefs of self.

Dr. Chisholm uses a lot of deep fascial release techniques which are unique to her practice. A combination of functional range release, massage, Rolfing, and trigger point therapy, to help fascia reorganize at various depths and in variuous planes that can contribute to chronic pain and biomechanical restrictions.
